Teacher and Founder

I have been working with young people in education since high school, and balanced coaching and mentoring roles in the past five years as a professional tutor. 

Since university I have been involved in care and community work, which is now with refugee and dementia groups. Both of these types of work are important to me on a basic, human level, and they have together developed an increasing skill in helping people through stages of life.

Bio

I have been tutoring at A level and GCSE since 2019, and have helped students navigate their own paths as well as coursework, exams, and university applications. My work has been nourished by characteristics clear since a child, and furnished in my own education where I was last at Oxford. I have had increasing roles in a mentoring capacity, providing a devoted place for students to work on their bigger pictures, and that has been informed by different forms of community work. 

 

Curiosity is part of my nature. When I was four, I was into sharks – into the small parts, that were not as often seen, and the kinds of stories that could be told about them. I think this says I have a hardware for being intrigued, and it is a basis of my tutoring. So, it’s a matter of course that I carry the interest in each subject I hope for students. I hope that curiosity means I find the best in people I come to know. I have a way of seeking positives and strengths, as if it is my bias. And I feel rewarded where that process - hearing students and supporting them - shows up as a primary thread in my work. 

 

I can be direct and gentle. Sometimes call for one, other times call for more of the other, and I am careful they are always in balance. My students can expect to see benefits as that balance ensures a strong sense of building. There is no moment when students should not have to sit resigned to confusion. I come to meet them, wherever, and find a way that they can walk, wriggle … work out to more clarity. I have come to know that then, in the medium term, students work through things they didn’t expect to. Overall, I’ve seen marked change in results and happiness as a student. 

My life involves community work as well as tutoring. This has been broad, and remains so. I volunteer with an asylum charity, and two Care-focused charities. In 2024, I started as part of the complementary therapies team at Hackney’s St Joseph’s. These two dimensions are different, and also similar, as they are levels of relief, understanding, and improvement. I feel the things I do have become mutually informing. My tutoring has certainly benefitted, especially from a deepening context of care and skill, as I plan to work in psychotherapy. And I try to carry that care and emotional literacy to student’s academic lives.
